we learned this week with great sadness of the passing of ian rawes,
sonic enthusiast and single-handed creator/curator/producer of the
london sound survey; a charismatic fantastic speaker, generous soul, and
good friend of the program. he will be greatly, greatly missed, and we
dedicate this program to his life, his work and his memory. our thoughts
go out to those closer to him than we were.
if you are not familiar with the london sound survey, we definitely
recommend you explore it, but only if you've got the time, because once
you start digging in here you probably won't come out for hours - it is
fascinating, entertaining, moving, and beautiful:
https://www.soundsurvey.org.uk/
and if you'd like to read more about ian and his work, tony herrington
has written a wonderful piece about him in the wire:
https://www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/essays/ian-rawes-26-february-1965-19-october-2021
or you can read the great interview paul skinner of the london
metropolitan archive did with him in 2019 (also linked to in tony's essay):
https://londonssoundheritage.wordpress.com/2019/08/12/greetings-future-listener-the-london-sound-survey/
we can't say enough about ian and the sounds he captured for us all, so
we won't say anything else; we'll let his sounds do the talking. we've
constructed this show largely from the 2 LPs released as the london
sound survey, 2013's 'these are the good times' and 2019's 'thames'. 2
other recent releases that have been waiting for airplay seemed to fit
well in the mix, simon whetham's 'closed system' and gabie strong's
'wilding sun', so we included them, along with another london recording,
an intro made at a brexit rally (pro- or con-? we don't know) in
parliament square in 2019 by keith de mendonca.
again, we are always looking for new material, whether raw field
recordings, field recording based composition, or introduction
submissions. we are also now accepting proposals for full editions of
our guest curated framework:afield series. send proposals or material,
released or not, on any format, to the address at the bottom of this
mail. if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch!
