ARNAU SALA: 11.11.11

Last April, Arnau Sala took part in a residency organized by l’ull cec 
organized in Berlin. During that period, Sala defined and began 
developing a project that orbits around number 11, a cipher he has 
shared a particular relationship with since the day he was born on 
November 11 1978, now (practically) 33 years ago.

The project deals with chance, intuition and numerology, using graphic 
art and abstract sound to create, in Arnau’s own words, “a super-element 
derived from 11 independent elements / pieces – in this case loops” to 
be cut in 11 vinyl records.

During the last few months, Sala has continued working in this project. 
Thanks to the collaboration between l’ull cec, Canadá and the label 
Fauni Gena, 11 vinyl records have been made. These will only be used 
together on the night of the performance, on 11 November. Afterward, 
each of the 11 records will follow its own path.

Each record has been individually cut by hand and contains 11 tracks. 
Each of these 11 tracks ends in a locked groove. In other words, when 
the needle reaches the end of the track it gets trapped in an infinite 
loop and the recording continues repeating itself ad infinitum until one 
takes the needle and repositions it elsewhere on the record. It is thus 
a mechanical loop, 1.8 seconds in length when the speed of reproduction 
of the turntable is set at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute.

This coming Friday, we will present the results of this long process in 
a unique and unrepeatable live performance that will also have an 
installation component. During his intervention, Arnau Sala will combine 
the loops and explore the possibilities offered by 11 turntables and 
some mixers as his only tools.

The evening will start at 22:00h with DJ Zero. The live performance will 
begin at 23:00h.
