SIRENS 2012 is the code name for a project based in the sound of the  
Dutch civil defense sirens system. This system consists in around 4200  
sirens placed all across the country and tested regularly, resonating  
in unison exactly at 12:00 (midday) every first Monday of the month.

The first step is to gather recordings of the monthly sirens tests  
through this open call, so I would like to ask you to contribute with  
recordings of any of the 12 tests that will happen throughout 2011.  
The simple goal is to collect as many recordings every month as  
possible, allowing us to map this large scale event from a variety of  
locations.

Outcomes of the project are still to be defined and will also depend  
of the received materials, consisting primarily in work derived of the  
archive of recordings made over this one-year period. Results will  
emerge likely at the end of 2011, celebrating the arrival of 2012 and  
embracing whatever revelations and transformative changes  
(apocalyptical or not) the new year may bring.

SIRENS 2012 : Contribution guidelines

- Recordings in any location within the country in all sorts of  
environments and situations are welcome, as far as the sound of the  
sirens is audible in the recording. It is encouraged to record as well  
a couple of minutes before and after the sirens sound itself.

- There are no technical limitations neither special requirements. Use  
any sort of recorder (handheld, laptop, etc) and transducer/ 
microphones you have at hand.

- Please, send uncompressed audio (AIFF/WAVE) or lossless (FLAC)  
instead of compressed formats (MP3, OGG).

- Use any online storage system of your choice to submit the  
recordings (any FTP server or services such as Yousendit, Megaupload,  
Dropbox, etc).
Anyway, there is a Dropbox account made available for the project  
which can be used to upload your recordings.

- Once the files are uploaded, send an email to sirens2012 at gmail.com,  
including:

	* Your name and contact info.
	* Name of the file (and download link in case it is not stored in the  
project´s Dropbox).
	* Date and location of the recording (address, a well-known landmark,  
GPS coordinates, Google Maps...).
	* Recording equipment used (mic and recorder).
	* (Optional) Comments and personal impressions about the sound of the  
sirens.

(Files will be removed from the dropbox account as soon as I receive  
the submission email and download the files).

- If you feel like contributing throughout the year but feel unsure  
about being able to remember about it every month, drop me a line and  
you will be sent a monthly reminder the day before each of the siren  
tests.

- Every contributor will be included in the credits of the project.  
All the recordings and as well the derived works will be under  
copyleft (using a Creative Commons 3.0 license), granting the rights  
to be shared and reused. Submitting recordings implies that you agree  
with this license.
