“A VISTA” / “EYE SIGHT”
Performance of futuristic marine sounds
for tug foghorns, words lost in the wind and live electronics

Sunday, september 5th 2010 h10.30pm
Trieste city seafront, Trieste (IT)

Poems by Anna Achmatova, Tullio Crali, Gabriele D’Annunzio, Nikolaj Gumilëv, Vladimir Majakovskij, Osip Ėmil’evič Mandel’štam, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Silvio Mix, Sofronio Pocarini

By and with

Antonio Della Marina, Marco Maria Tosolini and Franco Giannelli

An original, really progressive performance, in which some musicians and speakers, on a number of boats at anchor in front of the Harbour Master’s headquarters, will sound the tug sirens following a score expressly composed by Antonio Della Marina and Marco Maria Tosolini.

All this admiring the amazing amphitheatre which is the city seafront (in the section between Molo Audace and Pier Four of the Old Port). From the land these musical tones will be picked up by a microphone, re-worked by using live electronic techniques and bounced back to Trieste Gulf.

The result will be a close, deep dialogue between land and sea, as well as between hosts and guests, travellers and piers. On the days following the exhibition a four channel audio-installation at the Stazione Rogers will broadcast the recorded performance.

The helpful genius of some of the regional representatives of the futurist movement (such as Crali, Pocarini and Mix) together with the most important national futurist artist (Marinetti) will be employed. The happy foolishness of Gabriele D’Annunzio and the tragic courage of the most distinguished Russian poets, such as Achmatova, Gumilëv, Majakovskij, Mandel’štam, etc., will also be included.
These vibrant Italian and Russian voices, victims of the brutal Stalinist repression, will alternate. These historical avant-gardes, bouncing towards the open sea, will be left free to chase one another among the water columns, fired from the tug-pumps and the searchlights on land…

The voices - once repressed – will sound free like the free spontaneous art of their creators, free like the wide and unbound sea in front of Trieste. The re-enactment of harmonies, created once in Kronstadt, will find new life here on our shores and express again the serene strength of a re-invented “concert for tug foghorns”.

Hopefully, this will be a happy revival of the event put on stage in winter 1921 in Kronstadt Harbour near St. Petersburg, in the presence of Lunakarskij, the enlightened Minister for Education and Culture of the first period of the Soviet Rule. In fact, during the first two months of 1921, Kronstadt was the focus of a commune, led by its Soviet, opposed to the concentration of power in hands of Bolsheviks after the October revolution.

The sublime power of Art against wars and the violence of History !
