Hello all,
**sorry for cross-postings - and once again if you are not interested
in receiving newsletters just ask and I' ll remove you from my list..
my latest work is the first of a series of installations dedicated to
the exploration of the musical and architectural potential of
everyday domestic appliances -
it is accommodated at the Arthur Sykes Rymer Auditorium at the
university of York ("..the premiere listening space for reproduced
sound in the UK..")
until this Monday midnight
note that this is NOT a public event,
and access to the space is limited and NOT guaranteed especially off
the working hours,
(however, if anyone is in the area and interesting in visiting the
installation, he may contact me and I can make sure he gets in)
so I decided to upload a video on my site - fully aware that it' s
not possible even to imply the actual work
that way

domestic appliances project #1
A domestic freezer has been selected as the only sound source. Using
a variety of carefully selected and placed contact microphones, coils
and other transducers (mainly custom-made), sounds from the machine
are amplified and projected into the auditorium - achieving both an
exploration and an expansion of the machine - to develop a composed
sonic environment.
Sound here operates on an architectural level in competition with the
Freezer' s corporeal presence and by enacting areas of different
sonority within the auditorium. This provides visitors a ready-made
sonic environment for them to experience, an opportunity to wander
inside it, to explore it and define their own individual pathways
through the work – their unique encounters with it.
Questions of site- and time- specificity of the work arise due to the
highly-referential nature of both the found-object and its
accommodating space, this might introduce a conceptual aspect to the
work. But the physical presence of the Freezer, the carefully
composed soundscape and the individual character of the auditorium,
are evidence that it' s not about A freezer into A space, but about
THIS very Freezer into THIS space and the-artist' s own
interpretation of how they can interact together and merge.
Marinos Koutsomichalis (Athens, Greece 1981 - ) composer, sound-artist.
Active in the fields of both sound-art and notated music, Marinos
Koutsomichalis profoundly indulges in sound and all auditorial
stimuli, from within a philosophical viewpoint. He is interested in
creating self-evident sonic experiences - organic life-forms that
guide or inspire, in turn, their very maker. Usually in his works,
traditional ideas of formalism, causality or transformation are
abandoned and "musical" references are overwhelmed, for the shake of
sound itself, which is no longer the carrier of an artificially
planted "meaning" or "message" but the very message itself.
As a sound-artist, he works within a strict site- and time- specific
context, utilizing DSP techniques, field recordings and generative
procedures. His main focus is on the architectural possibilities of
sound - how to occupy space sonically in meaningful ways - both
through intuitive performances and scholastic installations.
Phonographic techniques hold a distinct place in his arsenal, as both
a tool to interpret given space or found-sounds, and, further, to
document his own work, always in respect to the boundaries medium-
oriented reproduction imposes.
Notation is just another medium for him to explore - its textural and
timbral possibilities in particular, and though not his main focus,
his acoustic output should not be overlooked, as it features works
for a variety of instruments and ensembles that are frequently
performed. He is, also, into various side-projects or solo
experiments, from time to time, when he feels he needs to do
something different, trying to constantly re-establish his individual
relationship with sound.
His work has been released by various labels including Entr' acte
(uk) and EchoMusic(gr), while he both performs / is being performed
around the globe - amongst others Usa, Greece, Uk, Netherlands,
Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland. He is currently pursuing an
MA by research in composition with digital media at the university of
York, under the supervision of dr Tony Myatt, whilst he holds an
offer to undertake a Phd in music in the same university. He also
holds degrees in Harmony, Counterpoint and Management. He spends most
of his time between York, Athens and Creta.
