'Sarajevo-Wall' (The Ångström Soundwall Reconstruction)

In 1998 artist and composer Leif.e. Boman was invited to Sarajevo to
create
a work dealing with the destruction of war.

Using rubble from houses once occupied by Serb
and Bosnian families Boman constructed a wall in front of the SFOR
soldiers'
headquarters in Dobrinja, a suburb of Sarajevo.

After the exhibit the piece, titled 'Sarajevo-Wall', was transported to
Sweden where it was a part of the Stockholm Culturecapital 1998. A
form of
the wall has since been exhibited in South-Korea, Australia, Singapore,
Japan, Morocco and Sarajevo.

The sound files used in this work were originally derived by Mr. Boman
from emission spectroscopy analysis of the metals and minerals found
in the
wall.

The analysis was then converted from the frequencies of photon
emission into
sound files and then subjected to further processing by the artist,
Leif. e.
Boman.

A library of these sound files were sent to Kim Cascone who then used
the
processing capabilities of Max/MSP to reconstruct the files into a
'sonic
wall.'

While no artistic statement can adequately describe the senseless
violence
of war Cascone's reworking of the 'Sarajevo-Wall' sound files only
hopes to
convey the disorientation and confusion thrust upon victims of political
systems that hold little regard for human life.
