This alva noto CD brings together disparate recordings created
thoughout the last four years, unified under a theme of dedication. All
nine studies share the history of being made specifically for someone
or for a project that for one reason or another remained open ended.
“wall anfang” for example, opens with a the voice sample “there must be
a reason why it is so clear in my mind.” When we realize the person
speaking is pioneering contemporary Canadian photographer Jeff Wall, we
may understand the rising high tone that intoduces the track as the
immitation of a photo-flash warming up to be triggered. The track was
originally prepared for a documentary about Wall, who became famous for
his large scale light boxes that cast white light evenly through his
photographs. Like this balanced light, the track presents a purity of
thought, that spirals inside and out, the voice of Wall breaking only
impartially this conjecture of sound, while adding an atmosphere of
introspection and study to the piece.
The percussive, almost marimba like sounds of the track “jr” echo the
woodcutting of Japanese printmaker Katsushika Hokusai, (whose work Wall
allegorized in his photograph A Sudden Gust of Wind (after
Hokusai),1993). The stark, poised three point intervals of sound bring
to mind the intricate and equisitely considered compositions of
Hokusai1s style of Ukiyo-e 3pictures of the floating world.2 Jhonn
Balance1s premature death in 2004 gave way to multiple dedications to
his life and music by people who took influence from his activities in
Coil. The track “odradek” was originally prepared for the tribute
record ...It Just Is (In Memoriam: Jhonn Balance). Nicolai worked with
Balance when commissioning him for the award winning release 20’ to
2000 a CD set for the last 20 minutes of the year 1999.
These diverse engagements come to rest within this release. Like the
image that seals the font cover of the CD, that depicts liquid
oscillating with various frequencies, we are reminded that sound can
give form to image and to thought and that it may continue to resonate
in absences, particles, or processes‹until a point of final closure. ‹

Carsten Nicolai (b.1965, Karl-Marx-Stadt, Germany) fuses sight and
sound in minimal installations and sculptures. His work suggests the
atmosphere of an alchemist’s laboratory where sound is converted into
frequencies, pitches, pops and pulses. Working outside the bounds of
representation and art history, he often composes arrangements using
signal tones and the sounds of communication data. These arrangements
are released under the name alva noto in the music field where he is
also known. Prior to working with sound, he originally studied
landscape design.
His performances and installation works have been shown in museums and
galleries around the world including recently at the Tate Modern
(London, UK), Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), YCAM (Yamaguchi, Japan).
He has collaborated with such artists as Ryuchi Sakamoto, Scanner and
with Frank Bretschneider and Olaf Bender as Signal. Works by Alva Noto
have been released on numerous international labels including
Raster-Noton and Mille Plateaux.

LINE is proud to present the first full length collaboration by Richard
Chartier and Taylor Deupree since 1999’s Spec. (12k). For this
collaboration, sound artists Richard Chartier and Taylor Deupree were
invited by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC,
to create a new live work inspired by the Seascapes series of renowned
Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto on the occasion of his
retrospective exhibition. The result is this live recording,
Specification.Fifteen. This work premiered on March 30, 2006 in front
of the curved panoramic window of the Museum1s Lerner Room as the sun
set across the city1s skyline. Specification.Fifteen evokes the
stillness and opposing yet related spaces of Sugimoto1s Seascapes,
which suggest infinitesimal change and variation under a seemingly
uniform surface.
Mystery of mysteries, water and air are right there before us in the
sea. Every time I view the sea, I feel a calming sense of security, as
if visiting my ancestral home; I embark on a voyage of seeing.

Richard Chartier, sound/installation artist and graphic designer, has
created critically acclaimed recordings for labels such as 12k/LINE
(USA), Trente Oiseaux (Germany), Spekk (Japan), Mutek_rec (Canada), DSP
(Italy), and ERS (NL), and Fallt (Ireland), including collaborations
with artists Taylor Deupree, William Basinski, and COH, and has
appeared on numerous international compilations. His digital minimalist
work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of
sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening.
Chartier’s sound works and sound installations have been presented
internationally including at the exhibits Sounding Spaces at ICC
(Tokyo, Japan), I Moderni / The Moderns at Castello di Rivoli (Torino,
Italy), 2002 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY),
Resynthesis at The Art Institute of Chicago and with the travelling
sound exhibit Invisible Cities created by digital media curators Fehler
as well as solo and collaborative installations for Fusebox (DC), 1515
Arts/G Fine Art (DC), Die Schachtel (Milan, Italy), and Diapason (NY).
He has performed his work live across Europe, Japan, and North America
at MUTEK (Montreal, Canada), GRM/Maison de Radio France (Paris,
France), Observatori (Valencia, Spain), DEAF (Dublin, Ireland),
Transmediale (Berlin, Germany), Lovebytes (Sheffield, UK), The Leeds
International Film Festival (Leeds,UK), The Rotterdam International
Film Festival (NE), Garage (Stralsund, Germany), La Batie (Geneva,
switzerland), and other noted digital art/music festivals and at
exhibits such as Frequenzen [Hz] at the Schirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt)
and A Minimal Future? Art as Object 1958-1968 and Visual Music:
Syneasthesia in Art and Music Since 1900 at the Museum of Contemporary
Art (Los Angeles).In 2000 he formed the recording label LINE and has
since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and
installation work by international sound artists and composers
exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism. The
premiere release on LINE, Chartier’s Series as awarded Honorable
Mention in the category of Digital Music by the prestigious Prix Ars
Electronica, 2001 (Austria).
Taylor Deupree is a sound artist, graphic designer, and photographer
residing in Brooklyn, New York. On January 1st, 1997, he founded 12k,
music label that focuses on digital minimalism and contemporary forms.
In 12k1s 8 years of existance it has released 35 CDs and become one of
the most respected experimental electronic labels in the world. In
January 1999, Deupree currated a compilation for New York1s Caipirinha
Music label that he called 3Microscopic Sound.2 This release was among
the first to gather together artists of this style and helped put a
name to a rising genre of electronic music. September, 2000, saw the
launch of 12k’s sublabel LINE, with collaborator Richard Chartier,
exploring conceptual, ultra-minimalist digital sound and the
relationship between sound, silence and the art of listening. In
September, 2003, Deupree started a 3rd label called Happy to release
what he terms as 3unconventional japanese pop.2 Happy was born from
Deupree1s interest in Japanese pop music and the fact that it is quite
unknown outside of Japan. He hopes to change that with Happy. Over the
past 12 years Deupree has recordedfor a number of other labels around
the world including Spekk (Japan), Ritornell/Mille Plateaux,
Raster-Noton, Disko-b, (Germany), Sub Rosa (Belgium), BineMusic
(Germany), Fällt (Ireland), and Audio.NL (Netherlands). Instinct
Records, Caipirinha Music, Plastic City (USA), and Dum (Finland), among
others. Deupree has received much critical acclaim and recognition for
his early musical projects including the techno and ambient sounds of
Prototype 909, SETI, Human Mesh Dance, and Futique (1992-1996) and has
many recording accomplishments and a substantial discography. His
design work has appeared on dozens of record labels around the world
and published in a number of design books in Japan and the UK. For the
past 8 years Deupree’s music has taken influences from his passion for
architecture, photography, and interior design and collaborative work
with other musicians has played a large part in his output. Combining
his computer techniques with guitarists (Christopher Willits), Pianists
(Kenneth Kirschner) and vocalists (Sawako Kato) has pushed his sound in
new directions and lead to one of the most pivotal recordings of his
career: a complete re-working on an album by the acoustic,
alternative/pop band Eisi from Japan. Such work has broadened Deupree’s
scope while helping to push modern electronic music into new frontiers.
