I have just been given the microphones to record the next SAIKO release but the onset of winter has somewhat paralyzed my fingers prompting delays and contemplating the claw-hammer banjoist?s lament birth of the blues from the spirit of arthritis or birth of arthritis form the spirit of the blues? General: My music is always a search for a personal space that can coincide publically in a primordial intimacy that cannot find expression other than through particular conjunctions and energies. It is not possible to contain or decribe this. I compare it to drawing in the sense of transcriptions of impulse into marks. But sonic marks are more volatile and bring a more excruciating sense of absence/presence than the reassurances offered by a physical artefact. From center to absence describes this situation: the center is ostensibly a physical fact of production but it is only in retracing the steps of a production that the thoughts or sensations are perceivable. I reach beyond the reductionist context and beyond Cage, just two examples, then, for an attentiveness capable of tapping into this unexplainable resource of sensation which I can also find these in other art forms and other kinds of music. I am impressed by the idea that all music is under-scored by a social/communal archetype. I am not the logical outcome of any history. In fact, as I go on, I see only the ruins of paradoxical foundations that occupy the grounds of an ambivalent excitement. I will not lose my individuality in identity. For the artist that wants to remain free it is forwardly an act of survival to outwit the head-hunters. Orphan Sound System: the rebirth of orphan sound system at karmanoia on november 16 seems to have met with decibels of respect and an invitation to return by the organizer so we will...but this time flo blank will be in spain but i have two other options in multi-percussionist andreas wenzlova or free improv drummer yorgos dimitriadis--we will see who replies affirmatively first... caspar nilson wolf will dole out the double kicks again...jeff gburek: www.futurevessel.com/orphansound Orphan Sound System, formed first in 1994 in Florence, Italy (somewhat between the lines of E.N.'s "this song was made to end all parties..." and Stockhausen's "Kurzwellen" ), migrated to Montreal and then Williamsburg, Brooklyn where the Axis of Evil killed it in 1998. Starting with the idea to make "free-hip-hop" or "organic techno", the trio always was my testing ground for a slash and burn beat macerations/miscegenations, my first live attempts via "dub ideology" to realize the etherically concieved beasts of my Radio Wide World (see www.djalma.com/orphansounds) projects but now it is more tightly organized around my growing abilities to string softwares and patches together that manage to simultaneously support and destroy one another...at least thats how it appears to my ears and, although it was dark out there, i heard stomping other than the drums... j.ff gbk http://www.futurevessel.com/orphansound/ http://www.mattin.org/desetxea.html http://www.djalma.com ____________________________________________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? There's nothing punk about Adriano Zanni's music though; instead of taking out that "c" you might want to remove the "n": this is more Puck, /Midsummer Night's Dream/ rather than /Never Mind The Bollocks/, evocative and superbly crafted music for laptop and field recordings. It's also, unless I'm very much mistaken, pretty much composed ? if Zanni can produce this kind of stuff live I want to see him ? which I suppose also raises the question as to why it's on an improv label like Creative Sources (wouldn't it attract a little more attention if it were on Bowindo, I wonder?). The six tracks follow each other without a break, from the cavernous slightly disturbing percussive rattles of the two opening tracks to the strange atmospherics of "44?25'37N 12?34'28 E" (that had me looking for a Fennesz connection, but a Google search for the precise co-ordinates only got me as far as an Italian astrology website, but I think it's somewhere in or near Genoa.. maybe someone will enlighten me) to the distant police cars and barking dogs in "From Belleville to Ravenna" and the exquisite chill of the closing "Hagakure (II, 105)". Wherever and whatever it is, /A Constant Migration/ is worth checking out. * "A constant migration" by frans de waard [vital weekly#548]: *The last release [of the 10 Creative Sources label CD issues of Autumn 2006] might be a bit of a surprise, since Adriano Zanni, also known as Punck, is not exactly the man I would expect on this all improvisation label. *So far his releases were all stuck in the microsound corner, but perhaps he's opening new territories.* Zanni uses laptop, field recordings, found sound and sampling to create his music. It proofs indeed to be the odd ball of this batch of his releases, even when the first track sound like an improvised affair. Zanni finely waves field recordings together with sounds recorded from objects and such like. *Improvisation seems far away on this release, which is still along the lines of microsound and found it's influences in the work of Roel Meelkop or Richard Chartier. On a totally different, but the best of all. Semplicemente disco dell'anno. preview and orders here http://www.punck.net/records.htm *SPECIAL DECEMBER PROMOTION:* Aconstant migration (between reality and fiction) (Creative Sources Records cs079-2006) + Nowhere Campfire Tapes (Afe Records -2005) = 15 euro (postage included) send a payment via paypal to ctrlaltcanc at punck.net thanx for your time ciao punck http://www.punck.net http://www.ctrlaltcanc.tk http://fulminiesaette.splinder.com/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/fulminiesaette/ http://www.myspace.com/punckism http://www.youtube.com/user/fulminiesaette From azimuths at freenet.co.uk Sat Dec 2 05:51:57 2006 From: azimuths at freenet.co.uk (Thanos Chrysakis) Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2006 11:51:57 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] INTERLACE Message-ID: ////INTERLACE/// Sat 16 Dec 2006 : 7pm Great Hall, Goldsmiths College, New Cross, London Matthew Milton (vln) & Tom McKay (diy electr.) The idea of interfacing with sensors and microcontrollers in the arts is nothing new, however what we see different today is that the knowledge and tools to accomplish this has become more accessible through various channels and development has become ubiquitous. At STEIM we believe it is an interesting time for both the artists and designers to rethink about how technology may enhance (or deprive) creativity, and share these thought amongst others. We have invited a handful of developers of sensor platforms to give an informal presentation about their work and experience, and have planned a roundtable discussion with these developers and an Amsterdam based user group. This will be an intimate gathering amongst the invited and registered guests of the STEIM Micro-Jamboree. For the Micro Jamboree we invited some of those artists as well as representatives of other institutions to present their projects. After a refreshing lunch there will again be a roundtable discussion to exchange ideas about the presented projects, and the balance between technology and creativity in sensor systems in general. Elegant, delicate, complex, organic, bold, charming, melancholy, nervous, or violent.. We are getting a constant stream of great (and grateful) feedback on this one.... Here is what the reviewers think >> The Wire > 274 says.... ""The animation work of Finn McNicholas - aka Ultre - has been used on Warp's Works & 20th Century Composers tour, and Warp's influence is certainly in evidence in the rhythmic chassis of All the Darkness, with its intemperate bursts of squalid rhythm counterpointed by more placid sequences. However, what lends the album its individuality is his use of instruments made from metal and wire, as well as slightly bashed-about acoustic instruments such as the untuned piano that weaves unsteadily through "Nobodies Favourite". There's a nice contrast between the conventionally sleek, futuristic aura of the electronic components of these pieces and a bustling, clankier DIY element suggestive of creaky doors and busy toolsheds."" After all, it's their first studio album. @c's members are laptop musicians or to be more precise laptop artists, and this is because more than often the output of their laptops is not restricted to sound. Laptop music, at least in its most interesting expression, seems to relate mainly to a sort of processual engagement. Again, a study of processes, an ongoing study or devoted investigation that may find its way all up to the very stage. Performing interesting laptop music is just another step in that ongoing process where research, chance, improvisation, and the endless tweaking of an immense flow of data are the very essence of creation and once again, study. While their other releases developed from stage improvisations that later crystallized as a released recording (this obviously after a quick drop at the studio), Study, composed between 2003~2006, Porto, appears as an ongoing quasi-academic construction that seems to be going to make it the other way around. Well, ironically, once again, a laptop musician studio is, most of the time, a laptop, and although probably more interconnected at the studio than at the stage (which of course also constitute different spaces and contexts), its core is still the very same laptop. And that studio, which as recording studio appears almost infinitely compressed both physically and economically (but still with a never ending array of possibilities), becomes an instrument more on stage. In the liner notes of the album, one can find physical evidence of what is perhaps the central element in studio music production, sound files (not the instruments that generate them, because what's inside a laptop is sometimes hard to grasp, and once again in contemporary music the definition of instrument can be very vague). To each track, a corresponding number of sound files, probably as diverse as the time and the multiplicity of processes that every one bears. Certainly not all the designations are as descriptive as others, but nevertheless constitute an attempt to provide some sort of mapping to each of the tracks' essence. What it says, its not only that the music contains a multiplicity of sound files and that each of them also probably contain even more and more files in an endless path to complexity. What it says is, with some irony, that this is a studio album, a study, and a study on the subject of sound, will certainly involve sound objects, and thats what these files are. The artwork, a series of illustrations by J?lio Dolbeth, bear an informal touch that is an obvious result of its own ongoing research and brilliantly encapsulate the main concept and spirit of this album. The relaxed informality of the studio dynamic is captured with a blurred combination of looseness and precision. The cables work as a visible metaphor for the complexity of the composition process and its beauty, after all something not very far from the mental engagement that drawing implies, drawing being also the place for studies, sketches, mistakes, chance, a processual playground that can also be presented as closure. Inside, in the actual record, one realizes that an @c studio album retains the same compelling freshness and vivid dynamics of their live acts. On every single track, and this probably due to that special mindset that the studio timeframe conveys, they manage to modulate with utmost elegance moments of abandoned contemplation with the most shearing and sonically engaging peaks of indeterminacy. The smooth swinging across the tracks is peppered with the intensity and surprise of a sonic roller coaster for the ear that even the casual computer music listener can enjoy. The overall attention to every aspect of the composition is remarkable and the sonic richness of every slice of audio transforms every listening into a stunning experience of rediscovery and newness. It's also interesting the way in which some sonic evidences of previous collaborations with other musicians, echo sparsely across the composition layers, working both as an almost nostalgic recollection of the audial past and a vivid feeling of stage improvisation-like artifacts. Interesting music, as everything that is deemed to be deeply appreciated, demands a special engagement from the listener that certainly goes beyond a superficial relationship with the subject. However, this release seems to also favor that sort of less demanding approach, you can listen to this record on an almost daily basis, establishing deeper contact only when your mind is withdrawn to its exquisite sonic modulations, or you can dedicate your full attention span to every masterful detail of its intricate and luxurious composition, where not all is what it appears to be. As said, this study spans from the last three years of public performances and studio reworking, if you've never caught them live, be sure to grab a sit on the next opportunity and prepare yourself to sonic delight, after all, the stage is the space and space is the place. Could you take take some of the sound, package it up with some physical evidence and ship it to Chicago, Illinois? To this end, Zoe Asta and I are curating a show called, "GeoPhonoBox," for which we hope to fill a 2400-square-foot gallery with sound generating boxes from places all over the world. Here's how it will work: There are two box sizes to choose from: 12"X10"X4" and 16"X12"X8." Each box must be able to generate its own sound (which can be as simple as a CD player/headphones or?) and its contents must identify the place of origination. Your work would be included with recordists of all leanings -- phonographers, composers, nature recordists, sound artists, ethnographers, pedestrians, geographers, agriculturists, naturalists, radio journalists and others who develop relations to place through sound. To confirm your interest, cut and paste the short application form at the bottom of this Call for Participation, http://www.zoeasta.com/ sound2.htm, into an email and send it to both of us along with a couple of mp3 examples of your recordings to: Zoe Asta AND Rob Danielson by December 17th, 2006. We will notify you that your application has been accepted by January 4, 2007, or earlier, and send you the box size of your choice. Boxes are to be returned to Chicago by February 10, 2007. The gallery opening at the Around the Coyote Gallery is on March 2nd. There are additional considerations and terms on the invitation link. Feel free to email us with questions. We look forward to including your work in the show! Sincerely, Zoe Asta and Rob Danielson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In the first hour, a look at the sonic universe of Scott Smallwood. And in the second hour, the Symbiosis Label Focus looked at San Diego label Accretions. This week: 6th December 2006: The monthly new release show.. a selection of the sounds that have been flying across the Symbiosis desk and hard drive for the last month or so. In the pipeline: NMA Tapes retrospective, 2006 recap And coming up in the new year: Esa Ruoho (Lackluster), Aidan Baker, Aaron Ximm, RF Have a great week, Simon. Symbiosis Playlist - 29th November 2006 Two features tonight: In the first hour.. Scott Smallwood was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up at 10,000 feet in elevation in the Colorado Rockies. When Smallwood was 10 years old, he received his first tape recorder, and ever since he has been fascinated by the possibilities of recorded sound. Currently based in New Jersey, Smallwood's work deals with real and abstracted sound textures based on a practice of listening, improvisation, and phonography. Scott is currently a doctoral fellow in the music department of Princeton University. And in the second hour.. The Symbiosis label focus returns with a look at San Diego label Accretions. Accretions is an artist-based independent music label with an ear towards experimental, improvisational and global sounds. Live @ Jauna Muzika Festival 2006, Vilnius, Lithuania. Laptop Quartet twentytwentyone Though these numbers do not represent the average age of this quartet?s members, they actually refer to the certain transitional period from what we know as 20th century, with its modernistic (in the neutral sense of this word) outlook, to what is happening right now, as well as what may happen tomorrow. Performance of this ensemble could be called concert as exhibition, or a retrospect of graphic musical notation extended with the graphical materials of non-musical origin, that are read as musical script and, through collaborative efforts, transfered into the sphere of live electroacoustic sound. Concert of twentytwentyone consists of four laptop musicians performing onstage a combination of these graphic notation scores: Having Never Written a Note For Percussion by American composer James Tenney, Draw a Straight Line and Follow It by American composer La Monte Young, A Heap of Language by American conceptual artist Robert Smithson, Treatise by English composer Cornelius Cardew, Morphology of City by architect/sound artist Tomas Grunskis, Expansia by Lithuanian composer Vytautas V. Jurgutis, Renaissance in Music by artist/composer Arturas Bum?teinas and the silent b/w film Symphonie Diagonale (1924) by swedish-german experimental film pioneer Viking Eggeling treated as a moving graphic score (the program is in the ongoing process of update). All the scores are projected on the screen for the audience?s observation. Members: Arturas Bum?teinas ? composer of electronic and acoustic music also works as visual artist with a leaning towards cinematography and conceptuality. He runs mixthemixthemix label as well as practically and theoretically supports the concept of a musical opus as a platform for parallel events. More info at www.bumstein.com/art Antanas Dombrovsky ? collector of ecclectic and contemporary urban folklore, most often working in collaborative spheres and projects. Lately he has been making noticeable appearances as a participant at visual art events. Lina Lapelyt? ? violinist, student of Keiko Wataya, she has performed solo with orchestras as well as with the alternative rock group Sugyvulintoslatakams. She is currently a student at the London University of Arts, improvises with the violin and records sinusoidal sound tracks with the use of computer. Vilius Lys ? is one of the representatives of the phenomenal dynasty of architects-sound-artists (including Kau?p?das, ?i?ta, Naru?is, Grunskis). Several albums of his music are available on the internet and prove that electronic ambient/glitch music has in no way reached a dead end. Selected pages from 'Treatise' by Cornelius Cardew Subjectivity is a synonym for Treatise. This piece, written from 1963 to 1967, is one of the most famous and most often performed graphical notation scores, consisting of 193 otherwise unrelated pages that are united by a single dominant symbol at the bottom of each page ? a double staff (an allusion to the reduced piano score?). Although the author has later indicated that the score?s horizontal space does not literally correspond to time, but because of this mentioned piano staff the score will be read in the traditional manner - from left to right. Treatise is a collection of graphical notation symbols without any further explanations or comments how they should be interpreted when they are transferred from paper into the sphere of sound. How should one interpret a line, a dot, or a circle?... You can only create your own answers to these questions by setting your own rules or, in other words, a model for collective action, which can remind us of a futuristic vehicle (p.50), or a spaceship (p.134), carrying its crew through ?the mess of potential sounds that permeate this planet and its atmosphere?. The Live!iXem.06 competition is now in its third edition and one more time it joins music, video and live performances having research and experimentation as common fundamental elements. The new italian electronic scene submitted just to the personal and creative usage of new technologies is the protagonist of the Live!iXem 06. Different styles, different ways of conceiving music and images, their own interactions and the internal sinergies. To confirm the ANTITESI's important work on the national territory through the project iXem, the Live!iXem 06 continues its own "journey" observing, promoting and spreading experimental artistic and musical activities and works strictly linked to the technological universe and to the research in the field of electronic arts. Two are the towns involved - Palermo and Rome, thanks to the collaboration between two indipendent centers, attentive to the contemporary artistic realities: ANTITESI (Palermo) and Rialtosantambrogio (Rome). Year by year, the Live!iXem changes with new formulas and structures, evolving, renowing and becoming a moment of development for social realtionships and international cultural and artistic exchanges After two days of audiovisual screenings in Palermo, the Live!iXem 06 moves to Rome for its final fundamental step: the live contest. Now it's the moment of the real contest!!! The preselected artists/groups are invited to live perform on the stage of the Live!ixem 06 starting at 6 p.m. until late night. Among the live peformances, the jury (Domenico Sciajno, Thomas Ankersmit, Edwin Van Der Heide) will choose the one considered the most interesting in quality, artistic and performing value. Thanks to the support of the Royal Netherlands Embassy, the Netherlands Culture Fund, Gaudeamus, Donemus, Dutch Jazz Connection, Edwin Van Der Heide and Thomas Ankersmit will perform live on the stage of the Live!iXem 06. The 14th of december at 4 p.m. a panel discussion opens the Live!iXem 06. Domenico Sciajno, musician, curator of the festival, considered one of the most active promoter of the italian experimental scene and one of the most representative italian artists abroad, involved in a serious and continuous work of promoting and spreading experimental electronic arts, and Fabio Massimo Lo Verde Professor of Sociology at the University of Palermo, with an artistic and sociological approach, reflect and discuss about the nowdays experimental electronic arts state and their relation with new media and telecoms network, in order to research new interpretative and fruition sceneries. The creation of this open diffusion site proved to be necessary because of today?s difficulty to perform disembodied concerts of electronic music on stage, in a classical frontal (actor/audience) representation space. Nowadays, these emerging new multimedia performances allow everybody to approach music in a more singular way, with a different listening practice and on a more sharing scene. Every year since 2001, (((NOMUSIC))) offers one or more festivals which programming is geographically variable and which function is to relay in a coordinated way a 24 hours earth revolution of no-musicians @ home. This virtual earth revolution materializes a world wide sound cover of 24 time zones according to the universal time [GMT 0]. This gives to participants who are scattered all over the world the opportunity to take part in the festival. The participation is free of charge and the recruitment is made exclusively on Internet through diffusion lists. The selection is not made according to practices and genres criterion but rather according to the approaches and artistic positions which should echo the logic of the festival. (((NOMUSIC))) platform offers two types of live. In its classical form, the participant plays alone at home for one hour. He can also play in dual. Dual is a live in which two geographical sites are linked via Internet and mixed together in stereo (participant 1 on the left channel and participant 2 on the right one). (((NOMUSIC))) wishes to generate improbable duals and gatherings between two participants during one hour time in a web audio performance. We make no storage because we think that Internet is a huge database which conveys already a great amount of dead informations and we don?t want to pollute it further. We are thus in favour of instant access to a selective event. The mechanism of the programming is not automated; it is relayed manually for 24 hours without any interruption by laboiteblanche and Carl.Y., two real human routers who are at the service of continuous audio stream and who endure technical difficulties and give rapid formation on the technologies of streaming to all the participants. (((NOMUSIC))) stands between musical negation and anti-bruitism, in a non-silent interstice of audio manifestation. It allows the composer-performer to be his own auditor, in a place where nothing should be heard but just felt as a new entity to observe. Enjoy your flight with us ! laboiteblanche & Carl.Y | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (a) (c) (o) (u) (s) (t) (i) (c) ( ) (s) (p) (a) (c) (e) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | information&comunication channel | for net.broadcasters http://xchange.re-lab.net (Xchange) net.audio network xchange search/webarchive: http://xchange.re-lab.net/a/ From yves_tk at gmx.net Tue Dec 12 04:37:59 2006 From: yves_tk at gmx.net (Till Kniola) Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2006 10:37:59 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] MERZBOW live! Headphones recommended. I am always looking for new sounds. Drop me an email or give me a call on the show - I would love to hear from you. Email: simon at symbiosis.com.au -- Hi folks, The usual mix of new sounds to start off the month. An interesting, mixed bag as always for the latter part of the year. And, as always, there is still much more to get through between now and the end of the year. Can you believe it is December already? My little boy is four and a half months old and he had his first solids this week! How time flies. This year has been a magical year. I feel truly blessed to be a father to such a beautiful baby boy. As well as the feature interview this week I will be showcasing some more new releases. The following week (20th December), I will be doing my first ever 'year recap'. It's not a best-of but more of a thank you to all the people who have supported Symbiosis this year. And a review of the great sounds that have floated through the mix this year. Finally, a podcast isn't far off. I have the skeleton of a website completed and will be launching that before the year is out. It will be features, highlights and interviews initially. Stay tuned.. Upcoming shows: 13th December 2006: In the first hour? Rainer Linz published ten issues of NMA Magazine between 1982 and 1992. Each issue was accompanied by a cassette featuring music documented in the magazine. The cassettes covered a wide variety of experimental, electronic and new music from around Australia. Over the past year Melbourne label Shame File Music has been digging through the archives and republishing the cassettes as free MP3s on their website. Tune in to hear Rainer and Clinton Green talk about Australian experimental music from the 1980s and their selection of pieces from the cassettes. And in the second hour? a whole host of new sounds. In the pipeline: 2006 recap And coming up in the new year: Esa Ruoho (Lackluster), Aidan Baker, Aaron Ximm, RF Have a great week, Simon. Symbiosis Playlist - 6th December 2006 The monthly new release show.. a selection of the sounds that have been flying across the Symbiosis desk for the last month or so. Entitled "Silent Night (Shepherds Quake)", it's available for free download now from Dark Winter: http://www.darkwinter.com This is a twenty-minute piece derived entirely from a brief recording of a music box playing "Silent Night". The machine winds down; it creaks and grinds and eventually the audio is overtaken by scrambled reiterations of itself; it stretches and slows, speeds and warps, chimes and clangs, sprinkles, stutters, sputters, and melts, till eventually all that's left is a glassy ghost of its former self. I've subtitled the piece "Shepherds Quake" to commemorate the fact that even on the first Christmas, people in the service industry had to work. Whatever religion you are, and especially if you're of no religion at all, I hope you at least get the day off this year. Enjoy! After a surreal encounter with a Fluxus Group floating a large portrait painting down a river in Cardiff, eating Borscht out of an oil drum and learning more about late Fluxus artist Emmett Williams (the face in the picture), Stewart bought Williams? the book An Anecdoted Topography of Chance. The book documents in detail, objects left at random on the desk of the artist Daniel Spoerri and it is this premise of chance that acts as inspiration for this CD. The Topography of Chance brings together an eclectic mix of artists, comedians and writers producing work ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre. An array of musicians, comedians and artists dominate the CD. Jem Finer (sound artist and The Pogues) and Andrew K?tting delve into folk archives with the beautiful John Barley Corn. It is said that Mark E. Smith could read a phonebook and make it interesting, here he fulfils a lifelong dream by reading the classified football results on BBC?s Score. Rothko supplies music to a darkly comic anecdote of comedian and writer Arthur Smith in I?ve Seen Your Arse (which features Caroline Quentin on backing vocals). Other tracks include British free-improv legend Evan Parker jamming with birds; The Late avant-garde guitarist Derek Bailey playing a duet with himself and comedian Simon Munnery recording the sounds of a drunk outside his house. Also featured on the CD are tracks from Australian fence player Jon Rose; The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow; Kombat Opera (Richard Thomas) composer of Jerry Springer - The Opera and Giant Sand?s Bird Song. Stewart Lee has written for radio, television, newspapers and magazines and performed as a stand-up comedian all over the world. Stewart is currently working on a new stand-up show about mallards, a novel about angels, and a play about folk singing soldiers in the Napoleonic wars. The Topography of Chance is part of the critically acclaimed Sonic Arts Network guest-curated CD series; a collection of themes and ideas that explore the edges of music and sound. Artist Biographies Stewart Lee Stewart Lee is a stand-up comedian, writer and director and is best known for being one half of the comedy duo Lee and Herring and for co-writing and directing the controversial and hugely successful stage show Jerry Springer - The Opera. Stewart Lee has written for radio, television, newspapers and magazines and performed as a stand-up comedian all over the world. In the early 90's, Stewart co-scripted the original appearances of Steve Coogan's Alan Partridge character for BBC Radio, and the show he performed with Richard Herring, The Fist Of Fun, transferred to BBC television in 1999. He directed Simon Munnery's Golden Rose Of Montreux Nominated series Attention Scum in 2000, and has worked as a script editor on TV shows by the comedians Harry Hill and Al Murray, The Pub Landlord. Stewart's first novel, The Perfect Fool was published to critical acclaim in 2001. He writes regularly about rock, folk and jazz for The London Sunday Times and presents radio shows on London's community arts radio station, Resonance 104.4 fm of which he is also a patron. Stewart recently directed a production of the Eric Bogosian play Talk Radio which premiered at the 2006 Edinburgh Festival. Stewart also recently appeared in Armando Iannucci's television programme, Time Trumpet and is currently working on a new stand-up show about mallards, a novel about angels, and a play about folk singing soldiers in the Napoleonic wars. www.stewartlee.co.uk . Derek Bailey The late Derek Bailey was a free improvising avant-garde guitarist and was born in Sheffield. Derek worked as a guitarist and session musician and played with many performers including saxophonist Evan Parker, trumpet player Kenny Wheeler and double bass player Dave Holland. These players often collaborated under the umbrella name of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, recording the seminal album Karyobin for Island Records in 1968. In 1970, Bailey founded the record label Incus with Tony Oxley and Evan Parker, often said to be the first independent label owned by musicians. 1976 saw Bailey form Company, an ever-changing collection of like-minded artists, including Anthony Braxton, Tristan Honsinger, Misha Mengelberg, Lol Coxhill, Fred Frith and many others. Bailey died in London on Christmas Day, 2005. He had been suffering from motor neurone disease. www.incusrecords.force9.co.uk . Evan Parker Evan Parker was born in 1944 in Bristol and is a free-improvising saxophone player. Parker is probably better known for his 1960s work, which rapidly assimilated the American avant-garde ? John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler and others ? and forged his own, instantly identifiable style. Parker has recorded countless albums solo or as a group leader, and has recorded or performed with Peter Br?tzmann, John Stevens, Derek Bailey, Keith Rowe, Joe McPhee and many others. Parker also has appeared in pop-music contexts: on Scott Walker's Climate of Hunter, and on dubesque albums with Jah Wobble, the adventurous drum n bass duo Spring Heel Jack and rock group Spiritualized. He has also increasingly become interested in electronics, usually through inviting collaborators such as Phil Wachsmann, Walter Prati, Joel Ryan or Lawrence Casserley to electronically process his playing in real time, creating a musical feedback loop or constantly shifting soundscape. Jem Finer Jeremy 'Jem' Finer is a musician and composer who was one of the founding members of The Pogues. He played a handful of instruments including banjo, mandola, saxophone, hurdy-gurdy, and guitar. On the first of January 2000, Finer composed Longplayer, a piece of music that is designed to last 1000 years without ever repeating itself. Finer was "Artist in Residence" at the Astrophysics Sub-department of the University of Oxford between October 2003 and June 2005. His latest band, "The Big Eyed Beans from Venus", have just finished recording their (as yet untitled) first album. http://elrino.co.uk and www.scoreforaholeintheground.org . Jon Rose Jon Rose was born in 1951 and is an Australian violinist. He consistently performs at numerous music festivals, and has appeared on over 60 albums, and worked with artists such as Derek Bailey, Chris Cutler, Otomo Yoshihide, KK Null, Alvin Curran, Evan Parker, John Cage, Bob Ostertag and John Zorn. For over 20 years, Jon Rose has been bowing (and recording) singular sounds out of fences around the world, and since 2002 has been joined by Hollis Taylor in playing The Great Fences of Australia, part of the results of which having been presented Melbourne Festival 2002, and a future fence planned to be constructed using Just Intonation and the Fibonacci series. Rose also curates his own festival, String 'Em Up, which focuses on innovative use of stringed instruments. The festival has travelled to Berlin, Rotterdam, New York, and Paris. www.jonroseweb.com. Kombat Opera (Richard Thomas) Richard Thomas is a musician, writer, and comedy actor. He is best known for composing and scoring the award-winning Jerry Springer - The Opera with Stewart Lee. Thomas collected the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Score in 2004.Richard Thomas has appeared in Simon Munnery?s Perrier Nominated show, The League Against Tedium and was the Musical Director on Harry Hill?s First Class Scamp, 50 date national Tour. For TV, Richard has been Musical Director on The Frank Skinner show (BBC1 & ITV1), This Morning With Richard Not Judy (BBC2) and the Golden Rose of Montreux nominated Attention Scum (BBC2) amongst many others. Richard is the creator of Kombat Opera, a live performance ensemble responsible for the critically acclaimed Tourette?s Diva show, which aired at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was also performed in the USA, Australia and Europe. Arthur Smith Arthur Smith is an English alternative comedian and writer. Arthur was born in Bermondsey, South London and describes himself as a "semi-professional" comedian. He was one of many stand-up performers on the alternative comedy scene in the Eighties. He still performs today in much the same manner, regularly attending the Edinburgh Fringe comedy festival, although has several 'serious' writing titles under his belt, including stage plays such as An Evening with Gary Lineker. In addition to stand-up comedy, such as his recent hit Arthur Smith Sings Leonard Cohen (later broadcast on Radio 4), he is also a radio presenter on such BBC Radio 4 programmes as Excess Baggage and Loose Ends. He took over as narrator of the TV series A Life of Grime after the death of John Peel and more recently was one of the Grumpy Old Men in the television series of that name. Simon Munnery Simon Munnery, also known as The League Against Tedium, is a British comedy writer and experimental stand-up comedian. He performs mainly to an alternative audience but has pierced the mainstream both with his BBC Radio 1 show in 1997 and his BBC2 television series, Attention Scum! in 2001. Recently, Munnery has been working in radio, and hosted Simon Munnery's Experimental Half Hour ("experimental in that it lasts an hour") and "Simon Munnery Weakly Chats' on Resonance FM. He also wrote and performed two four-part Radio 4 series called "Where Did It All Go Wrong?", which were broadcast in the summer of 2003 and the spring of 2005. www.leagueagainsttedium.co.uk . The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players are an indie-vaudeville-conceptual-art-rock-slideshow band. The Trachtenburg?s are a domestic trio (dad Jason, mom Tina Pi?a, 12-year-old daughter Rachel), who play quirky indie pop and all the song?s carefully rhyming lyrics come from the vintage slide collections they?ve found at estate or garage sales that accompany their performances. Tina Pi?a and Jason met at a Greenwich Village open-mic in 1989, and the pair later relocated to Seattle. They had a daughter, Rachel which at the age of six was recruited to play harmonica; (she later moved over to drum duties), Tina was appointed projector operator/backup singer, and the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players were born. The groups latest effort is Off & On Broadway, released by Seattle indie, Sarathan Records. It is a DVD of performances and day-in-the-life footage that demonstrates exactly how this one-of-a-kind band works. www.slideshowplayers.com . Mark E. Smith Mark E. Smith was born in 1957 and is the lead singer, lyricist, co-composer and hub of The Fall, a renowned and idiosyncratic offshoot from the UK post-punk/new wave music scenes. The Fall have continued for nearly thirty years to produce unpredictable and challenging music, varying richly in both character and quality, with the abrasive lyrics and half-droned, half-ranted vocals of front man Mark E. Smith providing the one constant note through a bewildering succession of personnel changes. As well as his work with The Fall, Smith has released the spoken-word albums and has supplied guest vocals for the Inspiral Carpets, Elastica, Mouse on Mars, Coldcut and others. Smith has also appeared in an acting role in several television programmes and films including a brief appearance as himself in the Michael Winterbottom film 24 Hour Party People (2002). www.thefall.info . It is just as sparse and stripped down as it is filled with very rich sounds whose sources and performance techniques are quite surprising. Toral himself asks that the listeners approach the Space recordings "without prejudice". At the same time, his video documentation does a great deal in showing the work's origins in a live, improvised performance setting. In anticipation of Toral's appearance at Club Transmediale in Berlin at the end of next January with the Sei Miguel Ensemble, I sent him a few questions about the development of his new works... *Southwestern Desolation: Marfa TX* Me and my Thomas Pynchon novel have holed up in the Southwestern Texas city of Marfa, home to unexplained light phenomenon and the world's largest collection of Donald Judd and other canonical minimalist artists. At the Luggage Store, we're inviting So Long Flatfoot and Organ of Qwerty to play for your end-of-year reflection. So, if you're back from holidays, in the Bay Area for the holidays, or don't believe in holidays, come by, grab a tasty burrito/Vietnamese food next door, and hear some music! With fuzzed, murky and beautiful 'songs' featuring looped feedbacky guitar, tape recordings, and occasionally violin, their music brings to mind listening to a decaying tape of breakup songs from the other end of a warehouse. http://www.geocities.com/solongflatfoot http://www.purevolume.com/solongflatfoot Organ of Qwerty is the laptop-improvisation identity of local drummer John Hanes. In his work, a few notes from simple sound sources (like violin or bicycle pump) are molded, reworked, and stretched into immersive and reflective sound spaces. http://www.myspace.com/organofqwerty www.purelovepower.com From ondasonoraradio at yahoo.es Thu Dec 28 08:48:01 2006 From: ondasonoraradio at yahoo.es (Onda Sonora Radio) Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2006 14:48:01 +0100 (CET) Subject: [Microsound-announce] CONTENTS ONDA SONORA 23-12-06 Message-ID: <20061228134801.59348.qmail@web25607.mail.ukl.yahoo.com> ONDA SONORA (Experimental Radio Sessions), Madrid (ES) ?Radio C?rculo de Bellas Artes 100.4 FM Sabados / Saturday. 20h -www.circulobellasartes.com www.ondasonoraradio.com ?Listen any time http://www.artesonoro.org/archives/category/artesonororadio/radio_ondasonora/ CONTENTS ONDA SONORA 23-12-06 01.
