How can complex beauty emerge from simple conditions?
What forces guide unfolding creations, and how can
their evolution be directed or controlled? Join us for
a pilgrimage into the soul of human-computer
collaboration as artists working with customized
generative software systems perform music, animation
and poetry made in part to make itself, but not
without human help!

The evening will begin with ambient soundscapes,
progress through video game electro bleeps and glitchy
hip hoppery, and end off with visceral danceable
techno
come for a part of the night or enjoy the
full spectrum of the evening
s entertainment

(approximate set times and artist info below)

1:00am-2:30am
DJ HYPERCOLOUR presents DJ CHRIST SHEPHERD ON
EZEKIEL'S WHEELS OF STEEL
- After a bizarre experience involving flying saucers
and DanceMix'92, for this special event Eric Shinn's
DJ alter-ego Hypercolour has been called upon to be
reincarnated as "DJ Christ Shepherd on Ezekiel's
Wheels of Steel". Behold the gospel according to
mash-ups of diva house, supernatural country-western
ballads, early-90s breakbeat techno, sacred chorales,
praise-hop, and amens.

12:00am-1:00am
NAW & NOKAMI
noise factory/arts electronica
www.nokami.com
naw.phoniq.net
- Here we have the pleasure of experiencing a rich
audio-visual collaboration between two
highly-accomplished performers and innovators with
digital media. NAW is Montreal ex-pat and current
Torontonian Neil Wiernik, renowned techno producer and
composer of danceable and experimental music since
1988, with releases through such notable labels as
Noise Factory, Pertin_nce, Clevermusic, Piehead and
A/S Systems. An avid designer of custom software
environments, NAW has been working at customizing the
open-source Pure Data software to enable live creation
of refined techno compositions with subtle randomness,
in an inspired reaction to the convention of
generative music that is often herky-jerky and
over-chaotic. Possibly the most well-organized chaotic
dance music!

- Nokami is Montrealer Eric Filion, renowned for
striking visual contributions to such international
arts events as Optronica, Arts Electronica, SHARE,
CeC, SAT, Champs Libre... Having recently moved to
Toronto, he has been building a collection of footage
filmed throughout the city, with each scene serving as
malleable material to edit live with real-time musical
interaction in his Descension project. With heavy
processing in software ranging from Premiere and After
Effects to Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Resolume,
Visual Jockey and FreeFrame, the resulting visual
interactions are striking and complex. These are
enticing animations of urban deconstruction, with
physical landmarks and virtual architectures all
moving in synchronicity to the throbbing pulse of
Naw's relentless rhythms.

11:00pm-12:00am
MANTISSA & FRIEND OF PHI W/ EXISTENTIAL IDIOTS FEAT. &
C.O.I.
www.brokenbeat.ca/robb
www.mantissa.ca
- Friend of Phi is Toronto native Robb Gray, who is
coming back home from a programming sojourn in
Vancouver to showcase for us his unique blend of what
he calls "aleatronica" - a fuzzy dice-pimpin' ride
over rolling rhythms and melodies of the broken beat,
drum and bass and glitch-hop varieties... He'll be
playing with a modular algorithmic music composer,
using number sequences like Morse-Thue, earthworm and
3n+1, and fractal generators like gingerbread man,
chip, henon and kamtorus. Just nod your head!

- Mantissa is a project of Toronto-based media artist
Jeremy Rotsztain, who develops live cinema techniques
using synchronized audio-visual performance. Achieving
painterly animation effects with colour fields and
pixels evolving according to generative patches and
random algorithms, on this special occasion Mantissa's
vibrant visuals will also feed off of Friend of Phi's
musical output to achieve sensory synchronicity amidst
the collaboration's unified unpredictability.

- Existential Idiots is the name taken by dynamic duo
Lucas Goldstein and Joel Blain, whose goal on this
evening will be to create a musical chaos into which
Friend of Phi's sonic machinations will devolve. They
are threatening to play with a hacked Speak-and-Spell,
circuit-bent electronic sound spasms, flute flouting,
stochastic turntablism and Darwinian DJ best-fit
selecta-ism - we should be very scared indeed!

10:30pm-11:00pm
GLOSSOLALIA CREW VS. MINDBENDER
bjjm.tnir.org
www.myspace.com/mindbendersupreme
- Inspired by Deep Blue's steep learning curve and
stubborn challenging of chess master Kasparov, but
without the corporate backing of IBM, Toronto's
Glossolalia crew brings a DIY approach to the
borg-like task of assimilating hip hop lyrical flows
and breakbeats. Armed with Bronwyn Miller's Pure Data
breakbeat engine and Festival speech synthesis rap
patches, DJ Kids & Explosions' Ableton arrangements
and Finlay Braithwaite's production wizardry, the crew
will engage local emcee extraordinaire Mindbender in a
prototype computer-vs-human rap battle. Here we have a
David-vs-Goliath scenario where for once humanity is
on the Goliath side of the equation - so will you root
for the experienced human with proven skills on the
mic, or the underdog rapping software that spits
twisted flows because it doesn't understand the
meaning of its words!?

10:00-10:30
THE PLANKTONAL BIOMASSIVE feat. Nintendo DS
Electroplankton array
electroplankton.nintendods.com
- Electroplankton is Japanese media artist Toshio
Iwai's wonderfully bizarre new title for the Nintendo
DS handheld gaming system. By providing 10 unique
virtual sea-life environments in which plankton growth
can be directed to achieve different sonic effects,
Electroplankton blurs the line between game,
simulation and instrument. With the gracious support
of Nintendo Canada, for this special event up to five
DS Electroplankton systems will be played
simultaneously for an immersive sea soundscape created
live by Laura Barrett, Eric Shinn and Daniel Borins.

9:30-10:00
LEN GOINS & DAFYDD HUGHES W/ BEN BOGART
www.sideshowmedia.ca
www.mortmain.com
www.ekran.org/ben
- Dafydd Hughes retains a deep love and respect for
musical traditions, having studied jazz piano at
Mohawk College and the University of Toronto where he
achieved a degree in performance with a minor in
composition. He especially loves the tradition of
forward-thinking experimentation, as his music
currently fuses acoustic and electronic elements using
programming environments such as Csound and Pure Data
to synthesize the seemingly disparate genres of church
music, jazz improv, rock and electroacoustics.

- With a hand in various incarnations of industrial
ambience, sonic deconstruction and technical
tinkering, Len Goins aka "mortmain( )" says that he
seeks epiphanies in exponential contexts and forces
cathartic redesign of legacy systems, that this
procedure is transhuman, always audible and
machine-seeking, and often spontaneous and/or
automatic and generally apathetic to its environment.

- Ben Bogart's new media projects span from responsive
architecture to software development, audio-visual
programming to performance, anywhere from local
workshops to international conferences. To accompany
Len Goins and Dafydd Hughes' music, Ben will present
his Self-Similar visual performance piece. This is
centered on the fractal theme of self similarity,
generating images though an openGL feedback process so
that the part resembles the whole. This is performed
live in response to the audience and the music.
