He is certainly one of the most innovative composers of his time, a pioneer and central figure in the world of experimental and electronic composition and performance. His early work, alone and in conjunction with Robert Ashley, David Berhman, Gordon Mumma and others in the Sonic Arts Union--which Lucier helped found in 1966--is musically rich while simultaneously exploring the many physical and psychic effects of sound. Pieces such as "I Am Sitting in a Room" (1970) and "Music on a Long Thin Wire" (1977) are unequivocal minimalist classics. Recent activity includes sound installation work and compositions for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by concentrating on the combination of close tuning and pure tones, sound is subtly sculpted and shifted to create mesmerizing patterns and sonic shapes. ALVIN LUCIER finds two extremely sympathetic interpreters of this approach in Charles Curtis (cello) and Anthony Burr (clarinet). This collection of compositions spread over two CDs, including a new piece, titled "Charles Curtis" and written by Lucier for this project, elicits an intense physical reaction - a testament to Lucier's poetic and scientific focus, as well as the deftness of technique with which Curtis and Burr execute these rigorously transcendent compositions. Packaged in a deluxe matte varnished fold-out digipak including a 20 page booklet of illustrations and writings by Alvin Lucier, Hermann Helmholtz and others. Cellist Charles Curtis is recognized internationally as a performer of new and experimental music. Time spent studying at Juilliard and teaching at Princeton in addition to acting as director of La Monte Young's Theater of Eternal Music String Ensemble and working alongside free music and art-rock musicians such as Alan Licht, Dean Roberts, and Borbetomagus has positioned Curtis uniquely at the crossroads of academic and outsider music. Currently, Curtis is a professor of music at the University of California, San Diego. Anthony Burr has performed extensively in the US, Europe and his native Australia, in a wide variety of situations playing the clarinet and live electronics. With artist Steve Ausbury, he created "Biospheria: An Environmental Opera", a site-specific piece based on the story of Biosphere 2, presented in San Diego in 2001 and in archive form at Cinematexas in 2003. Along with bassist Skuli Sverrisson, Burr is part of the Desist project focusing on improvised minimalism. London-based sound artist Janek Schaefer creates music that explores the spatial and architectural aspects of sound. Both have released and performed their music to critical acclaim and created site-specific pieces around the world. Stephan and Janek formed their audio/visual duo following a spontaneous duo concert in Szczecin, a city by the sea in Poland. They met again at the home of british composer Sir John Tavener to make recordings of his collection of classical and exotic instruments. For this project, these recordings are used to create soundscapes that weave together lush drones and sparkling tones to produce various intimate, hypnotic, and exhilarating experiences. -- www.audiOh.com www.bitsteam.de ( /infosheet112005.pdf ) From ondasonoraradio at yahoo.es Thu Nov 3 10:15:00 2005 From: ondasonoraradio at yahoo.es (Onda Sonora Radio) Date: Thu, 3 Nov 2005 16:15:00 +0100 (CET) Subject: [Microsound-announce] CONTENTS ONDA SONORA 01-08/11/05 Message-ID: <20051103151500.77821.qmail@web25608.mail.ukl.yahoo.com> ONDA SONORA (Experimental Radio Sessions), Madrid (ES) ?Radio C?rculo de Bellas Artes 100.4 FM Mi?rcoles/Wednesday 15h -www.circulobellasartes.com ?Listen any time -www.ondasonoraradio.com (In Internet Explorer) CONTENTS ONDA SONORA 01-08/11/05 01. They both noticed something special was happening during the initial recording session when they looked at a clock and realised that they'd been playing for over 5 hours. Thoughout the album Carter slowly plays louder and more powerfully than usual over drone-master Robert Horton's organic & electronic chimes, drones, jangles, dangles and splendor. The result is a vast, expansive sound cavern full of hidden melody, slow drones, textured tribal gong and hidden mystic rhythm. From the very start, when Horton drones in and Tom Carter strikes a single sustained echoing electrified note Lunar Eclipse sounds like the music is infused with that shock and weird light of an eclipse. Track one, Lunar Eclipse, is a slow drone metal meets Neil Young psychedelic freakout with vocals that sound as is they're recorded inside of a deep cave. On other tracks Horton's homemade instruments such as the electric barometer, boot, and sex machine fuse with Carter's twisted lap steel ebow shimmerings, prepared guitar. At other moments Tom's guitar or lapsteel solo over the top of the swirling noise chasm. On the last track Robert and Tom both play Horton's homemades welding a Harry Partch web of rhythm together untill it implodes in metal drone fragments of screeching fury. Lunar Eclipse demands to be listened to in it's entirety as one whole experience. It's has an undenialble power that will return again and again much like the natural events that subconsciously inspired the recordings. Tom Carter biography Tom Carter is best known for his work with Charalambides, which he co-founded with longtime creative partner Christina Carter in 1991. Since 2002, Carter has also undertaken solo work and collaborations. His 2003 solo tour, centered around the seminal Brattleboro FreeFolk Festival, featured unaccompanied solo shows and musical excursions (on stage and tape) with Bardo Pond, Thurston Moore, Dredd Foole, the MVEE Medicine Show, Ian Nagoski, Tower Recordings, and Double Leopards, among others. He is currently a member of Badgerlore, Friday Group, Spiderwebs, Kyrgyz (along with Loren Chasse, Robert Horton, and Christine Boepple), and his duo with Robert Horton. He runs the Wholly-Other Cdr label which has released the Charalambides music onto the world. Robert Horton Founded the Appliances, part of SF's first wave of punk bands in 1979. Played at the inaugural mayoral ball for Jello Biafra. ISM also in 79 was one of the first SF noise bands playing a series of house shows. Robert formed Plateau Ensemble in 1983, a tribal noise drone group who played in the Bay Area until 1987 drawing members from the Jon Hassell Group, ROVA, KU KU KU, Glorious Din, Eternal Glands of Secretion, Gamelan Seka Jaya, etc. Through out the 80's and 90's Robert participated in the cassette revolution releasing tapes in Japan, Italy, Belgium, Britain, and the USA. During the mid 90s to 2004 Robert's time was mostly in doing Anti- Racism Educational groups called the UNtraining. He continued to record but hoarded it all for himself. Lately the dam has broken with releases on Foxglove, JYRK, 267-lattajjaa, Celebrate Psi Phenomena, New American Folk Hero, Barl Fire, Spanish Magic and Outa. Robert records under his own name, Egghatcher, and Future Ears. He is currently a member of Kyrgyz, Beautiful Friend, Infinite Article, Broken Mask, and the duo with Tom Carter. Out of his Berlin officerecordingstudio he operates the Autopilot music publishing house and promotes record labels such as Sonig, Smalltown Supersound and Klangbad. Additionally he runs the small emphase label releasing among other things a 7" series of 1-instrument music and the last album by Anne Laplantine. And first and foremost he is a musician, now concentrating on his solo work and live appearances with bass player Alexej Gottschau after playing in various band formations. Two years ago his solo debut "klisten" had the press and music lovers everywhere turn somersaults when hearing this wonderfully whimsical smorgasbord of countless tiny sounds and instruments. All material on "klisten" had been strangely interwoven, laminated and set against each other yet always remaining songs, almost Pop. And despite all the complexity and craftiness it never sounded difficult, academic or pompous. One could dive into this music or simply move within it and discover a new plant behind each corner. But one would never be led astray by it. And if you walked the same path a few days later suddenly new buds had grown and someone might have carved a few weird symbols into the trees. And just before we started to miss Guido M?bius he surprises us with "Dishoek", his second album, recorded for Hamburg's Dekorder label. Again featuring a conglomeration of acoustic and electrical instruments (guitar, bass, violin, cornet drums, synthesizer, clarinet among other things.) and a variety of guests, so that one hardly dares to call it a solo album. Still everything is magically held together by one single person. Melodies and noises, styles and individual characteristics, intelligence and humour collide and become friends for live. We hear Krautrock minus Rock, Folk minus tronics, Pop minus popular; Psychedelia meets Improvisation meets Electronica without the slightest know-it-all approach. Styles get intermingled, copulate and finally dissolve completely to become only music without the need to be labelled because it is functioning completely within its own context and never fails to astonish. The computer remains a tool, never an end in itself and the alleged separation of acoustic and electronic music becomes completely obsolete. With its wily down-to-earth approach "Dishoek" proves that an eagerness to experiment and the will to explore unknown territories do not have to sound arduous yet always have the ability to gently surprise any adventurous listener. Rannisto [b1978] is a Finnish artist whose ultra-spare sound was formed via a diverse background of hip-hop, house, and experimental electronic music. Despite the highly improvised and free-form influences, ??niesineit? is highly calculated music so stripped down to the basic elements that subtle shifts in panning, envelope, or phase become instruments in themselves. He explores the ideas of rotation in much of his music, utilizing repetition and overlapping, out of sync structures that create networks of hypnotic patterns. ??niesineit? is a minimalist foray that defines Rannisto?s sound and breaks away from 12k?s recent mold of organic and melodic microsound. The beating of a? sinewave over a 4/4 kickdrum, or a blipping polyrhythmic loop creates ever-shifting patterns forming his style that is too sparse to be called techno, but far too rhythmic to ever be called ambient. His palette is simple, pure, colorless, and free of any unnecessary sound or movement. It is minimalism in the truest sense. It is challenging music that demands attentive listening. ? + 12k NOV.7.2005 AVAILABLE NOW artist: SAWAKO title: HUM cat.no: 12k1035 edition: 1000 NYC/Tokyo sound artist Sawako has recently made a name for herself with her own unique combination of field recordings and DSP combined with noticeably feminine touch. It is this strong use of both mediums that makes her hard to classify or neatly tucked away into a specific genre. Her latest release, Hum, is an elegant and detailed work in which she consciously brushes against the fringes of pop music by extracting and processing the sounds of everyday life and working them into melodies and arrangements. Coded sound blends lightly with piano, voice, roomtones, field recordings and the additional instruments from a number of supporting musicians including Aoki Hayato (guitar + pianica), and 12k?s Kenneth Kirschner (room tones), and Taylor Deupree (kyma). Hum is very much an album about life that takes influences from Sawako?s home in Japan and her recent years as a student of sound and media technology in New York City. There is at one time both a sense of girlish innocence and curiosity and the result marks a unique point in 12k?s recent output. While Hum is primarily a soft, ambient album, Sawako is obviously hinting at much more beneath the surface. It?s as if she is not just searching for music in non-musical places but playing hide-and-seek with the most beautiful and sublime sounds around her and forming them by hand into a dreamy work of art. + LINE NOVEMBER 7, 2005 NEW RELEASE: artist: DOUBLENDS VERT title: CISTERN cat.no: LINE024 edition: 500 AVAILABLE NOW http://www.12k.com/line/line024.htm online shop: www.12k.com/shop Cistern was made in a two million gallon underground reservoir at Fort Worden, a de-commissioned military base overlooking the entrance to the Puget Sound. The space?s resonance extended the instruments in a way similar to electronic processing. The acoustic properties of the cistern created new sonic relationships to which the group applied their musical concept.? Cistern captures Doublends Vert?s first experiences in the sound-world of the cistern. Doublends Vert formed in 2003 through a common interest in creating restrained, acoustic music exploring the timbre blending possibilities of the violin, accordion, and clarinet. Doublends Vert: Clarinetist Adam Diller?s (b. 1980) music deals with the problems of composing for recorded medium, integrating electronic and acoustic sounds, and improvising with social and natural?environments. His process draws on experience with jazz, composition, improvisation, and computer-based sound design. Since moving to Seattle in 2002, Diller has performed in many situations and produced 10 recordings. Annie Lewandowski (b. 1979) is a composer and multi-instrumentalist with backgrounds in classical, improvised, and experimental music. She has performed at festivals in the USA, Canada, and Europe with trio Doublends Vert and duo Emma Zunz (with Cristin Miller). She currently lives in Seattle. Tom Swafford (b. 1972) is violinist and composer active in a wide variety of musical styles. He studied composition in Boston, Berkeley, CA, and The Netherlands (with Louis Andriessen). He is a member of Cipher, Drumolin and Doublends Vert and also performs classical, bluegrass and rock music. He resides in Seattle, WA. Matt Crane joins on timbales for cistern tracks 4 and 5 and engineered this live recording. Crane has been playing drums from an early age. His profound interest in music has translated into the study of many different idioms. He currently engages in many improvised settings with an emphasis on environment and its shaping of the musical experience. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Greg Smith & Neil Wiernik http:///www.vagueterrain.net - curators/editors -- artist information tractile - sarnia / http://www.yearofthemachine.com/ / http://www.tractile.net If someone was asked what it would sound like if all of the most frightening, most exciting and sexiest scenes in cinema history were spliced together and merged with a robotic dance score, Tractile would surely be the reply. Adam Young (b. 1983) and Joel Boychuk (b. 1985), with several years of miscellaneous music experience behind them and a few years as great friends and partners-in-crime, decided to reinvent their sound and call themselves Tractile. Having been obsessed with the concept of controlling the uncontrollable and seducing recorded sound of any kind, the name was a suiting merge between the words track and tactile. Boychuk and Young played their first public live show in 2003 and have continued to shake dance-floors ever since, always impressing and exciting their audience far beyond expectation. Influenced by a strange combination of filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick and George Lucas and the evolution of techno music and emergence of the "minimal sound" through artists like Richie Hawtin and Jeff Milligan, Tractile delivers barrages of demented but motivating tech grooves perfect for dance floors and at-home listeners alike... and with a swiftly-growing international fanbase, it's no wonder the name is on the toungue-tips of DJs and music fans everywhere. intercom - montreal / http://www.le-son666.com/intercom/ Intercom's music is based on improvisations composed on keyboards, laptops (supporting homemade software), vocals, and various available instruments. In the tradition of German "Krautrock" bands such as Can and Neu!, Intercom then constructs tracks from these improvisations. In concert, Intercom gives a dynamic and explosive performance. A regular show runs the gamut from psychedelic jams to noise and back all keeping that monster beat. Audience members are sometimes known to plug their ears - but do it with asmile - due to the extreme noise and loud volume, while they dance along to the addictive pulsations of the Intercom sound. Intercom was founded by Jean-Michel Gadoua, Nicolas Dion and Pascal Gauthier in 2002. All three are self-taught musicians and hail from various electro-rock bands. Intercom was founding with the sole purpose of having fun and making spontaneous music with electronic devices and various available instruments. Intercom is the electro-psychedelic band that eats poutine in your neighbourhood. ether.mann - vague terrain / http://www.serialconsign.com Greg Smith has been involved in promotion, playing, or contextualization of experimental electronic music for 15 years. As one of the co-founders of Toronto's clonk crew, he cut his DJ teeth alongside diverse selectors such as Sutekh, Jeff Milligan, DJ Fishead, Task, and Martin Tetrault. Over the years, Greg has oscillated back and forth between DJing/music writing and his architecture education, in hopes that the two pursuits inform one another. Of late, Greg has been exploring the digital world of traktor and attempting to make sense of his vast music collection.. neil wiernik / vague terrain Neil Wiernik (b.1967, Mtl, Can.) is an audio contortionist, curator and digital media specialist presently living and working in Toronto. Neil has shown his work and curated exhibitions in non-traditional spaces and venues since the late 1980's. His projects and mediums of expression have varied and include works in radio, print and internet diffusion as well as other non-gallery spaces such as derelict buildings, billboards, pirate airwaves and public space. He has presented projects at the Finland Contemporary Museum, ISEA, Subtle Technologies Conference, The Medusa Complex, Mutek Festival and Gallery Optica. Neil is concerned with various types of story-telling using abstract environments and spaces to do so. Often the development of these narratives involves the creation of custom tools or subversion of existing ones. Neil was a co-founder of the Toronto and Montreal based electronic music promotion outfit clonk, the canadian electronic music portal phoniq, and currently co-curates vagueterrain.net, an online digital arts quarterly. TWO NEW RELEASES ON CON-V: . Josh Russell - for LP (CDR) cnvr05 Tracing the semiologic markings of Josh Russell's latest release unfolds a metaphysical scientist's travelogue, crossing through a variety of modalities of the possibility of sound. Here in this flux, movement itself is the ultimate quest & meaning. The slightest movement, caught in a magnetic web, casts a fibrillating microsonic aura in the finest aether yet unperceived through any looking glass. And that what is yet unconceived now miraculously comes in to being, out of being - both in form and substance a mere gesture, a signification of a quantum universe the likes of which neither Plato nor Einstein had fathomed. Josh Russell currently lives in Austin Texas. His work lies in the gully between academic electro-acoustic and ambient. Inspired by the soft incidental noises that one normally filters out he distills these sounds down and composes with them. By manipulating previously recorded sounds live as well as amplifying miniature sound environments he tries to create recordings and give performances that keep the listener engaged and present in the moment. In 2000 he founded Bremsstrahlung Recordings and is very much excited about diffusing net-audio through its TRANS>PARENT RADIATION sub-label. . Christian Toonk - unison (online) cnv24 The basic idea for "unison" is the phenomenon of binaural tones. When the distance between congruence frequencies is changed, pulsations occur. Here, Dutch artist Christian Toonk (vinculated to the Utrecht based collective Umatic among others projects) uses a self build instrument based on sinewave oscillators and feedback loops. The output is rewired to the input and provides a somewhat unpredictable datastream, by means of creating an opponent to interact to as in collaboration. Unison is an improvisation with sinewaves. Although a technical approach, an emotive quality is pursued. Christian Toonk: His recent music concentrates on controlling complex behaviour of audible systems. These systems consist of feedback loops, real-time synthesis and sound processing; by layering these audio streams, minimal compositions emerge that explore acoustic and tonal behaviour. Christian works and lives in the city of Utrecht, The Netherlands. http://www.roch.nl/ http://www.con-v.org Thanks very much for your feedback Cheers, conv -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The last relay of transmissions will be broadcasted on 91,3 FM and streamed on the Internet. To conclude the project, Radio_Copernicus will host the series of events "Talking Back to Radio ? Radio als Zuh?rer ? Artysci zmieniaja radio" in cooperation with the University of Wroclaw (December 6th - december 11th, 2005). What is happening to radio if it ignores the paradigm of marketing, news broadcasting and power rotation playlists? A wealth of alternative ?radio activities? by engaged broadcasters around the world demonstrate that such a radio is conceivable, feasible and in demand. Radio_Copernicus provides a open forum to discuss possible answers to these questions - not only in its programming, which is open to any form of radio art, but also in dedicated workshops. One such opportunity is offered by the international series "Talking Back to Radio", which includes an art program held in Municipal Gallery BWA/Wroclaw, four workshops exploring ?radio, art and society?, as well as a symposium where prominent media experts will discuss the topic of ?artist radio? from different points of view. The workshops, for which registration is now open, will take varying thematic approaches: Workshop 1: Free Radio; A Media-Simulation in Three Days, with Thomas Kupfer and Lukasz Smigiel Workshop 2: Soundwalking; From the Ear to the Radio Broadcast, with Hildegard Westekamp and Lukasz Szalankiewicz Workshop 3: LIGNA ? Radio Art as Intervention and ?Counter-Public?: Uncontrollable Situations, Unpredictable Productions, with Ole Frahm and Torsten Michaelsen Workshop 4: What is Radio Art?; Artistic Approaches in International Comparison, with Sabine Breitsameter and Robert Gawlowski Detailed information on registration for the workshops and their programs: http://www.radio-copernicus.org/en/workshop.html The international symposium ?Talking Back to Radio ? Radio als Zuh?rer ? Artysci zmieniaja radio? takes place at the University of Wroclaw from December 10th ? 11th. Planned are lectures by Wojciech Bruszewski (Lodz) on German-Polish artist radio, Hildegard Westerkamp (Vancouver) on "Radio that Listens", Eugeniusz Rudnik (Warsaw) on his German-Polish radioprojects, Robert Piotrowicz and Anna Zaradny (Sczeczin) on the need of an artist radio in Poland, Johannes Wilms (Berlin)on models of organisation and program-responsibility of free artist radios, Robert Gawlowski (Wroclaw) on art radio and Sabine Breitsameter (Berlin) on art infiltrating radio. Martin Conrads, Thomas Doktor, Olaf Matthes, Jacek Skolimowski, Marta Sztanka and Adam Witkowski, producers for Radio_Copernicus, will reflect on German-Polish perspectives on the Idea of a Free Arist Radio. An Open Mike will provoke spontaneous statements by the audience, questions and discussions.(Subject to alterations.) Sometimes these songs are sketches, sometimes full-blown compositions, it all depends on my inspiration and my available time. About Cinema Volta: Cinema Volta consists of John Maxwell Hobbs, a stack of electronic equipment, musical instruments in various states of disrepair and occasional collaborators. John Maxwell Hobbs is an electronic musician based in Stockholm Sweden who has been working with computer multimedia and telecommunications for more than eighteen years. His contributions to the early days of music on the web have been documented in the book "Virtual Music" by William Duckworth. From the book: "In a review of his interactive online instrument, Web Phases, Kyle Gann of the Village Voice described it as being 'on a noticeably higher artistic level' than the earliest tape-music and computer- music pieces, concluding that 'the potential for social reorientation is even more incredible,' and predicting 'we'll look back and say 1998 was the year our relationship to music entered a new era.'" For much of the '90s he was the Producing Director of The Kitchen in New York where he was involved in producing the performances by Philip Glass, DJ Spooky, David Hykes and many others. He is the Vice President of the board of directors of Vanguard Visions, an organization dedicated to fostering the work of artists experimenting with technology and also served on the Digital Arts subcommittee of the Mayor's Council on New Media in New York City. His interactive composition Web Phases was one of the winners of ASCI's Digital '98 competition. He has collaborated with artist/ programmer Mark Napier on Ripple, an interactive musical instrument. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They offer a combination of performance, workshop and screening related to aspects of audio and video synthesis, suitable for small venues, festivals or universities: 1) Derek Holzer + Sara Kolster (+ guests): live audiovisual performance 2) Pure Data workshop for sound and image 3) Soundtransit.nl presentation 4) "visibleSOUND/audibleIMAGE" screening Their focus will be the western United States and Canada in March-April, and the northeast US/ southeast Canada in May. PROGRAM OPTIONS 1) Derek Holzer + Sara Kolster (+ guests): live audiovisual performance Both Holzer and Kolster find inspiration in the history of experimental cinema and electroacoustic music, as well as in contemporary "live cinema", improv and microsound practices. Their performance work centers around the use of photographic transparencies, found objects, field recordings and sparse instrumentals to create layers of interrelated sound and image. Improvisations with local sound or video artists are welcome! 2) Pure Data workshop for sound and image Pure Data is a free and open source software similar to Max/MSP which can be used on Linux, OSX and Windows to process data, sound and image in real time. This workshop covers the basic syntax of the program as well as its use in live performance. Depending on the venue, it can last 1-4 days and accomodate up to 12 persons. 3) Soundtransit.nl presentation SoundTransit.nl is an online, collaborative soundscape project by Sara Kolster, Marc Boon and Derek Holzer dedicated to field recording and phonography. On this site, you can BOOK a sonic transit through a wide range of different locations recorded from around the world, or you can SEARCH the database for specific sounds by keyword, artist, country or location. A presentation of this project can include an introduction to field recording and phonography, a discussion on the importance of open licenses such as Creative Commons, or a technical discussion of the structure of the website. 4) "visibleSOUND/audibleIMAGE" screening This lecture and screening, made up of "historic" and contemporary works from the collection of Montevideo/Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst (Amsterdam), investigates the interrelation of what has often considered to be two seperate disciplines: sound and image. Works shown will include: 1) Steina & Woody Vasulka: Violin Power [US][1978] 2) Steina & Woody Vasulka: BAD [US][1979] 3) Servaas: 4 Poems [NL][1981] 4) Matthew Schlanger: Lizard Hearts [US][1986] 5) Nicolas Provost: Papillon d'Amour [BE][2003] 6) Jan van Nuenen: SET_4 [NL][2003] 7) Bas van Koolwijk: five [NL][2002] 8) Derek Holzer & Sara Kolster: resonanCITY [NL] [2005] About the artists: Sara Kolster [NL 1978] is a visual artist with a background in design. Recently, the focus of her work shifted more towards video and film; capturing details from urban locations, visualizing fragments of stories of these environments. She uses different strategies, from time-based media (video, film, photography) to appropriated research methods belonging to different observational disciplines (journalism, documentary & archeology). Derek Holzer [USA 1972] is a sound artist with a background in radio and streaming media technologies. His work has focused on capturing and transforming small, unnoticed sounds from various natural and urban locations, networked collaboration strategies, experiments in improvisational sound and the use of free software such as Linux and Pure-Data. Their work ?resonanCITY? has been performed live in Holland, Brasil, ex-Yugoslavia, the Baltic States and at the Transmediale 05 festival in Berlin. ?resonanCITY? also took the Second Prize at the 11th International WRO Media Art Biennale in Wroclaw, Poland in May 2005. Their collaborative website Soundtransit.nl currently shares almost 600 sounds, contributed by 150 different artists from around the world. The project's main subjecta are modern improvised music and new media arts as tools for interpersonal communication, group and self-_expression, reflection and joy. The main aim of the project is to create an occasional, international art group, consisting of artists from Poland and other EU countries. The group will meet and work together within one week of October 2006 at CfCA Laznia and other places around Tricity (cities of Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia, northern Poland). The main issue of the meeting is to seize the relationship between art based on improvisation and the place where it is performed. The audiovisual material recorded during the series of planned and spontaneous meetings, happenings, performances and provocations will be analysed, rethought, sampled and reconstructed into a form of multimedia compositions. The result will be performed by the multimedia orchestra (project participants) during the final concert at CfCA Laznia. The whole concert will be recorded in audio and video format and released as a DVD. Invited artists are musicians representing improvised, experimental and electronic, instrumentalists and composers from academic and alternative scene and artists working with new media, film, video-art and other visual ats. The participants should be aged 25 and below, however in some particular cases it is not necessary. Aplications are gathered utill the end of December 2005. Terminal Gdansk 2006 is held within the EU "Youth" Programme in cooperation with CfCA Laznia Gda?sk. For each performance, sound artists will be invited to work directly with the sonochemical reactions taking place within the observatory. Created in collaboration with scientific laboratories in Japan (Institute of Advanced Sciences and Technologies), Germany (Goettingen University), Russia (Alexander Miltsen Research Lab), and Belgium (Institut Meurice), Camera Lucida directly converts sound waves into light by employing a phenomenon called sonoluminescence: ultrasound within a liquid causes micro-bubbles of gas to implode, at which point they become as hot as the surface of the Sun and emit light in the shape of sound waves. Previously, the only way to view sonoluminescence has been in a highly specialized scientific laboratory. Camera Lucida, the world?s largest display of sonoluminescence, presents the first opportunity for people outside the scientific community to perceive this mysterious phenomenon. I am looking to assemble a disc of tracks inspired by this theme and interpreted in different and creative ways. The opportunity here would be to get some small exposure for your music and moniker, at this stage it does not look like we have cash to support the commissioning. The conference will be held at penal colony at Port Arthur in order to match the conference theme with the surrounding environment. If you are interested in getting involved in this project (from an artwork or music point of view) can you email me here at: Rowland.Atkinson at utas.edu.au Please pass this on to other music-making buddies you think might be interested. Does anyone have advice on printing/publishing small runs of cds or cdrs and artwork? cheers rA -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Influenced by a strange combination of filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick and George Lucas and the evolution of techno music and emergence of the "minimal sound" through artists like Richie Hawtin and Jeff Milligan, Tractile delivers barrages of demented but motivating tech grooves perfect for dance floors and at-home listeners alike... and with a swiftly-growing international fanbase, it's no wonder the name is on the toungue-tips of DJs and music fans everywhere. intercom - montreal / http://www.leson666.com/intercom Intercom's music is based on improvisations composed on keyboards, laptops (supporting homemade software), vocals, and various available instruments. Intercom is the electro-psychedelic band that eats poutine in your neighbourhood. ether.mann - vague terrain / http://www.serialconsign.com Greg Smith has been involved in promotion, playing, or contextualization of experimental electronic music for 12 years. Of late, Greg has been exploring the digital world of Traktor and attempting to make sense of his vast music collection through this new tool. neil wiernik - vague terrain / http://www.naw.phoniq.net Neil Wiernik (b.1967, Mtl, Can.) is an audio contortionist, curator and digital media specialist presently living and working in Toronto. Shipping rates will apply after 1st January 2006 ? What is the most significant development that has occurred in adventurous music during the last decade? It?s arguably neither a technique-driven development nor a technological one. Rather, it?s how we, musicians and audience alike, have opened our ears to the world and embraced its sounds as both a musical resource and as music itself. Blocks of Consciousness and The Unbroken Continuum explores the work and aesthetic of various cutting edge musicians, environmental/sound artists and noise-makers. As well as profiles of Richard Chartier, The Necks, John Wall and Sachiko M, the book contains explorations of the history and changing nature of free improvisation, of Cage?s iconoclastic 4?33", and of where to draw the line (somewhat tentatively, to be sure) between improvisation and composition. There is, in addition, a series of personal statements by almost two dozen musicians, composers and sound artists, collected by Rhodri Davies; and in Out in the Field Bertrand Denzler and Jean-Luc Guionnet interview improvisers about their music and group the anonymised answers thematically. The authors of the principal chapters ? David Toop, Clive Bell, Brian Marley, Dan Warburton, Andy Hamilton and Will Montgomery ? are well-known and respected writers on music/sound. Machines, noise and improvisation are factors common to all of the chapters in the book. David Reid?s DVD selection of video performances also carries this theme. The performances, all filmed during the last five years and part of his growing archive, represent a diverse range of musicians and their musics. Note, however, that the DVD content is neither illustrative of nor subordinate to the written material in the book; it comprises a chapter in its own right. A feature of Blocks of Consciousness and The Unbroken Continuum that will be much remarked upon is Damien Beaton?s lavish design, which makes the book so much more than a mere receptacle for words. ? At some point I will do something specific for this site but for starters I wanted to put this release online in mp3 format. The Live!iXem.05 competition is now in its second edition and one more time it joins music, video and live performances having research and experimentation as common fundamental elements. The most indipendent electronic scene, not interested in compromises and commercial mechanisms, far from dj sets and dance floor, submitted just to the personal creativity. Different styles, different ways of conceiving music and images, their own interactions and the internal sinergies. So among the participating works the jury, composed by some of the most particular artistic figures of the international experimental electronic scene, has selected the most interesting italian contemporary artistic productions introducing them to a more and more curious and attentive audience. Fine works, sculptures of sensorial materia: sound, space, time, colour, mass. One the principal aims of the Live!iXem.05 is also to open a window on the panorama of the international artistic experimental electronic scene and to favour a comparison between that reality and the national one. An artistic exchange, a true opportunity offered by the stage of the Live!iXem.05 that sees the selected italian artists performing close to those own characters of the new electronic avang-garde who has chosen their works. Live!iXem.05 will take place the 9 | 10 | 11 december in the auditorium of the Candiani cultural center in Mestre [Venice]. SELECTED WORKS The jury ( (Jeremy Bernstein, Phill Niblock, Xavier Quer?l, Domenico Sciajno) has selected six works. Equal reward for all selected artists, live exhibition and publication on the DVD catalogue Live!iXem.05 represent the prize for the selected works. THANK YOU! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley having received several submissions of vocal and/or narrative work over the part few months, we embarked on our second edition of vocal field recordings this week (you may remember our first, earlier this year, inspired by tim coster's vocal and field compilation), loosely structured around joseph young's narrative, and quite theatrical, piece, the family album. his field recordings take on a more literal role than we're used to here, while playing an active, not an illustrative, role in these memoirs. we also heard several voices (as well as several voiceless recordings) in the work dan crall, including the amazingly emotive opening tale from a lost soul who has just shot his horse. the latest instalment of viv corringham's shadow-walks, these undertaken on the irish island of cobh, also made an appearance - viv's shadow walks are sonic figurative reconstructions of her subjects favorite walks, constructed from sounds and objects found along the journey. voiceless respite was found along our way through new works by jason kahn and lawrence english, and by a somehow narrative but wordless piece by canadian composer eldad tsabury which in constructed from late night sounds of montreal streets processed and composed to represent the soundscape as heard from inside the belly of a drunkard asleep on a bench nearby. another event coming up of possible interest to framework listeners - if you'll forgive the personal plug (or even if you won't): i will be playing a live set at mark schreiber's upcoming tone debris event at the whitechapel gallery here in london - if you make it down please say hello! Silver Park began as a model of a proposal I was making for a park in downtown Detroit several years ago. A few years a ago, inspired by a couple guys playing an amplified cactus at High Zero Festival in Baltimore, I decided to try adding a couple piezzo transducers to it to see what I might hear. After a recent visit by Johannes Bergmark of Sweden I decided to re-double my efforts with Silver Park. "In this performance I hope to combine the desolate desperation of Detroit as portrayed on Silver Park with the rather frenetic desperation of the Market and Sixth area of San Francisco which will come through the open windows of the Luggage Store Gallery. This combination will then become the ground for my own desperate improvising." Eric Glick Rieman: "I modified a Rhodes electric piano by installing two extended sound boards which house vertical tuned zinc rods. These can be played by bowing or striking. I also prepare the inside of the Rhodes, which is left exposed so I can play the tines and resonators. I play the insides with my hands, with files, with mallets, with rocks and chains, and occasionally with the keyboard." Some exciting news from the tripel towers. Our picture plate release is finally in the shops after having travelled a staggering distance. Special thanks to Gaeoudjiparl (Goodiepal) for escorting it both physically and sonically from his Faroe Island abode to ?Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin where Pole apperently works. The audiotapes were mastered and cut to lacquer before making its way to the Czech Republic for manufacturing. The magic 12'ves are now safely at Office Tripel and a good supply have now been sent to numerous distributors and shops. This split LP features 15 compositional shorts by UM and 1 plunder collage by Ascoltare, plus selected Gordon Ramsay rants cut for your pleasure. To view the record and read our press please go here. http://www.tripelrecords.com/releases/um-ascoltare-picture-disk.php. The UM?s side gathers the best of his self- released classic Giraffe. Vague comparisons have been made to artists such as Vivian Stanshaw, Syd Barrett, Solex, Harco Pront, Voks, The Residents, Meadow House and even Kool Keith. However UM?s work is not easy to pin down. Although there are some distinguishable reference points to be considered, many comparisons don't particularly hold up and should be argued against whilst hearing UM's music. On the flip Ascoltare collates samples from reality TV chefs and binds together a mixture of musique concrete styles with yokes found within free composition and improv. Eccentric organ licks and music-library inspired textures float effortlessly around meaty montages of Iron Chef Judges and British foodies. Added ingredients include Rick Stein, Keith Floyd and Gordon Ramsey all of who undergo the pitch up & down treatment. This record will be streamed by The Wire magazine http://www.thewire.co.uk. We will keep you posted as to when this happens. A lovely review of this record can be found here. http://www.sonicartsnetwork.org/diffusion/diffusion_19_10_05.htm All of Tripel/Dubbel?s catalogue can be purchased @ our paypal shop as well as a small selection of other records which we?ve stumbled across.
